Acaricidal activity of Amburana cearensis on the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Ciência Rural
Dantas,Anne Caroline dos Santos; Araujo,Andreina de Carvalho; Pacheco,Alessandra Gomes Marques; Branco,Alexsandro; Sangioni,Luis Antônio; Almeida,Jackson Roberto Guedes da Silva; Horta,Mauricio Claudio.
ABSTRACT: This experiment was carried out to study the bioacaricidal activity of Amburana cearensis against engorged females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. The crude ethanolic extract from the leaves of A. cearensis was submitted to partition with organic solvents (hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate) in order of increasing polarity; and evaluated using three treatments at concentrations of 5, 10 and 25mg ml-1. To evaluate the acaricidal activity, engorged females were submitted to the adult immersion test. Parameters analyzed were the weight of females; weight of egg mass; percentage of hatch; reproductive efficiency; expected rate of reproduction; and efficacy. For each extract and concentrating fraction, tests were performed in triplicate....

Acaricide activity of leaves extracts of Sambucus australis Schltdl. (Caprifoliaceae) at 2% on engorged females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus Ciência Rural
Krawczak,Felipe da Silva; Buzatti,Andréia; Pivoto,Felipe Lamberti; Sangioni,Luís Antônio; Vogel,Fernanda Silveira Flores; Botton,Sônia de Avila; Zanetti,Gilberto Dolejal; Manfron,Melânia Palermo.
Parasite infections caused by Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus are responsible for the most of economic losses in producing-cattle countries in tropical and subtropical areas. Indiscriminate uses of chemical acaricides have contributed with the appearance of tick resistance to many drugs available in the marketplace, and it is a serious problem in the tick control. Flowers of Sambucus australis (South America), called "sabugueiro-from-Brazil", are used on infusions or decoctions forms in the folk medicine with diuretic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and laxative purpose, also employed for treating respiratory diseases in human. The main goal of this study was to evaluate in vitro potential of S. australis leaves extracts as an acaricide agent. Ethanol...

Amblyomma dissimile Koch (Acari: Ixodidae) attacking Primolius maracana Vieillot (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in the Amazon region, state of Pará, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Scofield,A; Bahia,M; Martins,AL; Góes-Cavalcante,G; Martins,TF; Labruna,MB.
The tick Amblyomma dissimile Koch feeds preferentially on reptiles (Squamata), although amphibians (Anura) also seem to be important hosts. We report an A. dissimile nymph infesting a blue-winged macaw, Primolius maracana, held in captivity in the Mangal das Garças Park, State of Pará, Brazil. Environmental observations suggest that free-living iguanas (Iguana iguana), which used to walk on the bird enclosure in the park, were the source of the A. dissimile tick that infested the blue-winged macaw. We provide the second world record of a bird host for A. dissimile, and the first bird record for this species in South America.

APPLICATION OF TICK SAMPLING ON ACARICIDAL BATH FREQUENCY IN Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE) Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; Camejo,A; García,I.
In this paper, a tick sampling method developed by authors was employed with the purpose of saving acaricides and decreasing environmental pollution by the use of acaricidal dip control bathing bovines in relation to a critical number of estimated ticks. Twenty-six Jersey cows in production were sampled. The selected sampling regions were: rear leg, udder, perinea and tail. Samplings were done from 7 to 8 am, and female tick standard size pattern was 6 mm or longer. Every two weeks approximately, samplings and acaricidal baths were done (13 samplings in total). Only cows with 10 or more ticks received acaricidal baths. Results showed that the procedure allows saving 50% of acaricides.

Biological parameters of larvae, nymphs, and engorged females of Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) (Acari: Ixodidae) obtained from artificial and successive infestations on Oryctolagus cuniculus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lagomorpha: Ochotonidae) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Freitas,C.M.V.; Leite,R.C.; Oliveira,P.R.; Fernández,F.C..
The development of acquired resistance to Amblyomma cajennense ticks was evaluated. A total of 18 rabbits were uniformly distributed into three groups named GL, GN, and GA that were submitted to three consecutive infestations with, respectively, larvae, nymphs, and adults of A. cajennense. After the infestations, the parasitic and reproductive parameters of recovered instars were evaluated. A significant reduction of recovery rates of inoculated ticks was observed only after the third infestation of animals in groups GL and GN (P<0.01). The modal day for drop-off of engorged larvae and nymphs increased along the infestations. The recovered engorged nymphs presented a significant reduction of the mean body weight between the first and the third...

DNA fragments of 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum', a feline heamobartonella pathogen, were detected from unfed Ixodes ovatus collected from vegetation in Hokkaido, Fukushima and Yamaguchi Prefectures, and unfed Haemaphysalis flava in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This finding suggests that ixodid tick is a possible vector of 'C. Mycoplasma haemominutum'. Spiroplasma DNA was also detected from unfed I. ovatus in Hokkaido, Fukushima and Yamaguchi Prefectures. The analysis of nucleotides sequence suggested that this Spiroplasma was distinct from registered species.

Evaluation in vitro of the infection times of engorged females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus by the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema glaseri CCA strain Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Leandro Barbiéri de; Furlong,John; Prata,Márcia Cristina de Azevedo; Reis,Éder Sebastião dos; Batista,Elder Simões de Paula; Faza,Aline Pasqualini; Leite,Rômulo Cerqueira.
Studies have shown that ticks are susceptible to infection by entomopathogenic nematodes. These studies indicate different susceptibilities of ticks to infection by these fungi, depending on the tick species, development phase, entomopathogenic nematodes species and strains and the time the ticks are exposed to them. Usually this period ranges from 24 to 72 hours. The aim of this study was to evaluate the infection times in vitro of engorged Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus females by the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema glaseri CCA strain, by analysis of the ticks' biological parameters. The results show that a 2-hour exposure time was sufficient for the engorged R. microplus females to be infected by S. glaseri CCA, but that a minimum exposure...

Evaluation of antibodies production against Borrelia burgdorferi in cattle submitted to rBm86 protein Boophilus microplus tick immunization and associated challenges influence BJM
Ishikawa,Márcia Mayumi; Fonseca,Adivaldo Henrique; Yoshinari,Natalino Hajime; Osório,Ana Luiza Alves Rosa.
IgG antibodies production against Borrelia burgdorferi in immunized cattle with rBm86 protein from Boophilus microplus was evaluated as well as the influence of the association between immunizations and stress through indirect ELISA test during one year. In the present study there was no influence of the isolated challenged used on the production of IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi. The rBm86 immunogen did not cause significant oscillation in the production of IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi capable to interfere in the serological results for Lyme Borreliosis in cattle. This study demonstrated the possibility of transitory changes in the production of antibodies after the association of vaccine stimuli and stress, emphasizing the necessity of...

Labruna,M.B.; Pinter,A.; Roncati,N.V.; Pereira,M.C.; Faccini,J.L.H..

In vitro evaluation of the effects of some acaricides on life stages of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bicalho,K.A.; Ferreira,F.; Borges,L.M.F.; Ribeiro,M.F.B..
The action of five acaricides was evaluated on eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The acaricides tested were: high cis-cypermethrin (0.01%) + DDVP (0.11%), coumaphos (0.05%), deltamethrin (0.0025%), amitraz (0.025%) and cypermethrin (0.015%). Eggs treated with high cis-cypermethrin and cypermethrin showed eclosion inhibitions of 72.1% and 67.3%, respectively, whereas coumaphos was much less effective (only 11.7%). Except for coumaphos, which resulted in 63.3% and 80.0% mortality of nymphs and unfed females, respectively, all compounds tested killed 100% of all tick stages to which they were exposed.
